Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is the word count minimum 30,000?
A. Because goals are good for you.

Q. Can I use a work in progress?
A. Yes, but you must add at least 30k to it during the course of the challenge month in order to “win”.

Q. Can I write a crossover/fusion?
A. Yes, but the central theme must be set in the Harry Potter ‘verse.

Q. Can I start engaging in the challenge in the last week of the month like a total twat?
A. No, because I will have deleted your ass on Day 14 of the challenge if you haven’t posted at least once. I mean it and I’m not going to waste my precious, immensely valuable time emailing you about it either.

Q. Can I write a sequel to another story?
A. Yes, but it should stand on its own.

Q. Can the story be part of a larger arc?
A. As long as the story stands on its own as a complete work, yes.

Q. Do I have to post daily?
A. No, but no less than 3 times a week during the course of the challenge.

Q. Can I post more than once a day?
A. No.

Q. Is there a minimum post length?
A. 1,000 words

Q. Do I need to finish by 4/30 or can I keep working on my project after the challenge is finished?
A. If you fail to meet the deadline then you’ve not completed the challenge. I may or may not allow posting after the challenge ends.

Q. Is there a limit to title length?
A. No, but don’t be fucking ridiculous either.

  1. G’day, I’m thinking about participating this round, but I’d just like a clarification on the crossover requirement. Does having it set in the HP ‘verse mean they need be in the WW for most part, or just for them to be in the general reality that the WW is in and only go to the wizarding side if a situation calls for it?

  2. I have an old idea which I originally developed for a different challenge, but didn’t use because a death in the family prevented me from having the time to participate in that challenge. Since I never actually got to write any of it, is it okay to recycle the idea?

  3. I have an HP/Ooku crossover that I am thinking about using for April, and have a question about how the warnings would work. A large amount of the population died of a magical plague before the story started, including most of the main HP characters, but I am not planning for anyone to actually die in story. If I did this story, should I be labeling it Major Character Death even though that is a past event, or simply warn for what is actually in the story?

  4. Oh, gosh, I wanna do this! Just not sure if work will allow. Still, I want to get back to writing, it’s been so long.

  5. I’m thinking of continuing an HP story I previously started on Rough Trade.

Is it against the rules to use this old story if I’ve already posted the previous chapters as a WIP on other sites like A03?

Or is it still ok so long as I’m adding 30K of brand new content to the story during the challenge?

    • Yes, but don’t expect me to police your commenters on other sites.

      • I know you are awesome, but I don’t expect you to be able to control random asshats across the internet.

I’m incredibly grateful you take the time to do it on your little corner of the internet. Asking for more than that would be both greedy and ungrateful.

I’m not saying you COULDN’T stage a revolution and take control of the entire internet in order to banhammer all asshats. I’m just saying you probably have better things to do with your time.

  6. I have a similar question to Writing Hitsuzen above, so I’m assuming the answer is yes, but wanted to verify. In the case of my story it opens with the final battle at Hogwarts and everyone is either dead or dying, including Harry, before time is reset to the morning after James & Lily are killed. Still put Major Character Death, yes?

  7. Hello! Um, just a quick question please, does the novella have to be set in the Harry Potter era or can it be set in the Founders time or similar?

  8. Hi. Reading the comments about warnings, I remembered that I have to warn for major character death, even if it’s canon. Can I edit an already published project file now? I’m new, so I’m unfamiliar with the permission settings and such during the course of the challenges. I already edited a submitted project file and realized that I had to submit it again after editing. I don’t wanna pile work on the moderators.

  9. Hi, I was approved and went to upload my Project File but every time I click on Author Dashboard it takes me to the log-in/register instead. Is there something obvious I’m missing?

  10. My fic will have a secondary character from another fandom as a mayor character with Harry Potter and Harry Potter characters in a fusion of both worlds
    It is possible??
