Chapter 6: Tony
Tony had come into work early to get paperwork done like he’d been doing since shortly after he started. Tony was also looking to see what could be done about the tsunami that hit the west coast yesterday morning and was curious about the automatic warning that failed to sound off knowing something was rotten about that but unless someone from the navy complained about it he was stuck unable to investigate like his brain wanted to which was annoying. Looking over at Ziva’s desk with a sigh and slight glare, knowing its good to see her alive but damn if what she said to him was getting under his skin. Closing his eyes against the words that keep entering his head.
“Why out of everyone in the world that could have found me, it had to be you?”
Tony hadn’t gone expecting to find her alive, but it was nice, even though he doesn’t really trust her anymore she was still apart of their team. Curling his arms around himself, knowing she hadn’t forgiven him for Rivkin yet, even though he knows he did nothing wrong other than going to her apartment alone. He knows everyone thinks he loved her and he did as a friend, but not as a lover that ship sailed long before he honestly never thought of her as a lover cause she was the handler for Ari she put together the dossiers that Ari looked through as far as he was concerned she helped kill Kate though he had to work through that to be able to work with her slowly eventually becoming to tentatively trust her up until Gibbs lost his memories and how he was treated by Tim, Ziva, and Abby during that time. Honestly, he got that they was all missing Gibbs but what about him? They all lashed out at him, including Ducky, but did anyone ever think about what he was going through? Leaning back into his chair pulling up his legs to wrap his arms around them curling even further into a ball, trying to push the memories away of how alone he had been and why he truly fell for the mark on the unsanctioned undercover mission that Shepard had had him on, because she was the only one to have a kind word for him during that time and he was craving it and allowed himself to fall for his mark. He still missed Jeanne but he just couldn’t leave his family he created for himself here even if it had turned toxic for a while, well its probably still toxic. Tony missed Kate for while they annoyed the hell out of each other they wasn’t always vicious although Tony still counts the tonguing a transvestite comment vicious, but to him it wasn’t about tonguing a she, he or both it was about tonguing Pachi’s killer that’s what got him upset. Tony honestly didn’t care what parts they had most of the time, yes he goes out all the time but a lot of the time isn’t not fulfilling. With Tony curled into a ball in his desk chair he looks much younger than he actually is, a few tears escaping as he drifted off into an exhausted sleep.
Gibbs watched Tony from the stairway not being able to sleep so came in to get some work done carefully walks over after Tony is asleep draping his jacket over his body in hopes of keeping him warm in the cool building, carefully running his fingers through Tony’s silky hair.
“Sleep DiNozzo, I’ve got the watch.” Gibbs stated, quietly then watched as Tony slumped into his seat completely relaxed at the moment.
Gibbs went to his desk and started going through the files noticing one curiously that was quite thick and had Tony’s handwriting on it pulling it out going through it, reports after reports of insubordination, arriving late, leaving early, copies of reports that was half assed, copies of reports that was in Hebrew, copies of reports of doing a book signing on company time, report of Abby giving Tony a trainee sticker cause he was late getting to her lab for results, copies of notes on Shepard’s behavior including threats of sending others on the undercover mission he got dragged into. A little note that not even autopsy was safe from dismissive words bordering on cruel words about not being Gibbs.
“Oh hell, Tones, no wonder you reacted the way you did in autopsy when I came back that time then at my stupid words you shrank into yourself more, I had wondered.” Gibbs whispered, looking at the sleeping form of his SFA tucked under his jacket looking really small with the side of the neck pulled to cover his face a little bit.
Gibbs spent the next couple hours pulling security tapes to watch what went on during that time making extensive notes and looking up and printing pictures of McGee being at the book signing, putting everything away when the room was light enough for it to be close enough time for the two idiots to come in, sure enough a few seconds later the elevator dinged and McGee walked off.
“Morning Boss.” Tim called, as he walked to his computer, pausing at the sight of Tony sleeping and wearing Gibbs coat.
“Let DiNozzo sleep for now. I’m going to get coffee.” Gibbs said, standing up.
“Yes Boss.” Tim said, setting his stuff down starting up his computer completely ignoring Tony.
Gibbs headed out to get more coffee and getting three cups two black and one doctored to Tony’s taste then headed back. Once inside he took the stairs knowing he could sneak up on his team to see what they’re doing. Gibbs stationed himself out of sight drinking his coffee and watching.
Back in the bullpen Ziva had arrived just as Gibbs settled into watch seeing Tim give his instructions on leaving Tony to sleep but Ziva ignored it and proceeded to pour some of her water bottle over his face causing Tony to sputter and cough.
“Agent David!” Gibbs growled, rushing over.
“Gibbs.” Ziva said, straightening up looking up but not caring.
“I told McGee to leave him alone and I know he told you. Are you trying to drown your teammate?” Gibbs asked, angrily.
“It was just a little water, Gibbs.” Ziva dismissed, unconcerned.
“Water, you poured on his face while he was sleeping and I saw you aiming for his mouth. So I ask again are you trying to drown your teammate?” Gibbs asked, getting even angrier.
“No, I wasn’t.” Ziva answered sullening.
“Could have fooled me, David.” Gibbs said, turning to Tony still coughing, moving to thump his back some getting flashbacks of doing this while he was recovering from the plague, “Go get Ducky to check your lungs to make sure you didn’t accidentally inhale any.”
“Yes, boss.” Tony said, standing up once he was sure his feet could hold him steady after the abrupt wake up call, then moving to the elevators.
Gibbs watched him go then turned to glare at the other two agents.
“McGee what was my orders when I left?” Gibbs asked, quietly, but dangerously.
“To let Tony sleep.” Tim replied, looking down.
“Why didn’t you stop her? Did you think its funny that she did the exact same to Tony as Kate did? Only Kate did it right after Tony almost died saving you both? Do you remember what he went through just before that? Do you remember that he came back ridiculously early? Its never funny to pour water over someone’s face while they’re sleeping! Especially not Tony who’s lungs are scarred from that plague bug that was sent here! Do you want him getting pneumonia?” Gibbs asked, glaring at both agents.
“No, boss I don’t want Tony to get sick.” Tim replied, shocked.
“Then get your head out of your ass. I was going to put this off till next week but after that display. McGee you have your physical test to do report there then to the gun range for both testing. David, your going to do the short course at FLETC. I’ll be sending an email to them about what classes you need. The course starts tomorrow go pack and head there check in by 1330.” Gibbs said, going to the elevator.
“Yes boss.” Both said, as they gathered up what they needed to head off to their assigned spots.
Gibbs sighed after they left then heads down to autopsy.
Tony walked into autopsy coughing sitting on one of the free tables waving at Ducky.
“Anthony what happened?” Ducky asked, grabbing his medical bag coming over starting to check him over.
“Ziva…water…Kate…bomb….plague.” Tony coughed out, hoping he’d understand the jumble of words that he had to use.
“Ziva poured water on you like Kate did the day you came back from the plague and had the misfortune to find a bomb on a car.” Ducky asked, listening to his lungs causing Tony to give a thumbs up indicating that he was right.
“Ducky?” Tony asked, curiously
“Just ask a precaution I’m going to give you a breathing treatment, dear boy.” Ducky told him, setting it up.
“Okay, Duck.” Tony said, not even arguing taking the mask.
Gibbs comes in a few minutes later, moving to lean against the table next to Tony.
”Duck?” Gibbs asked curiously.
“Just a precaution, Jethro.” Ducky told him assuaging the concerns.
“The other two got sent out one to FLETC classes and the other one yearly physical fitness testing.” Gibbs told Tony.
Tony nods leaning slightly against Gibbs shoulder holding the mask to his face.
“Ah punishment for not listening to you even though its something they have to do.” Ducky said, nodding.
Once Tony finishes the breathing treatment, Gibbs tells him to find them something to do as he hands over the coffee watching Tony take a drink moaning over the taste then head off to the elevator.
“Why did you not help Tony while I was in Mexico?” Gibbs asked Ducky once the elevator starts away.
“I was being a selfish jerk and angry at you and he just kept reminding me of you.” Ducky told him frankly.
“Don’t do it again.” Gibbs told him, then walked out to talk to Abby.
Gibbs walked into Abby’s lab to the blaring music getting angry and snatches her cord.
“Hey!” Abby yells turning around, “Gibbs?”
“A trainee sticker, Abby? On Tony?” Gibbs asked, curiously.
“He was trying to be you. He was on a power trip, he never did anything with us after work.” Abby said, crossing her arms.
“Tony self isolates when he’s
hurting, you know this. Instead of reaching out to help each other you drove a figurative knife into him by saying he’d never be me and you didn’t want him.” Gibbs said, disappointedly, “I’ll keep this cord and no cafpows from me.”
Tony got back to the bullpen booting up his computer, starting to check his email looking curiously at the RIMA subject line opening it reading the email from an Army Staff Sargent on behalf of a Navy SEAL reservist and it lists a lot of stuff. Tony pulls out his little notebook compiling a file on both men and everyone in their lives including the part where the seal was held for questioning about a robbery and NCIS was not contacted and a Field Sargent had to solve the case for the detectives along with a note about the Sargent filing a report on the Seal arguing about transporting a victim with their would be murderer and looks deeper into that case too and getting angrier that two detectives basically tried to railroad a seal and that they never gave them the opportunity to call for a lawyer even though both the Army and Seal guys asked for one and for NCIS to be called.
Once Gibbs comes up and looks at him curiously and hands him the folder Gibbs went to reach for it hesitantly causing Tony to pause in his searches to look at him.
“I found a folder this morning in my desk with your handwriting on it, I found lots of infractions in it from my time in Mexico.” Gibbs told him.
“Oh. No infractions. Remember when I went to speak during a high school graduation just after starting here?” Tony asked, a bit pale.
“Yes, you was gone for a couple days and came back kinda happy about someone you met there that you gave your card to cause he was going to be a SEAL.” Gibbs said.
“Yes, an ex Staff Sargent from the army emailed me on that SEAL’s behalf he’s in the hospital and there’s a whole list of stuff that’s going on but he was caught in the tsunami out there and the Staff Sargent is his POA.” Tony told him pressing the folder into his hand.
Gibbs opens the folder looking through it and how through it is with the start of the backgrounds on the players from the email and the listed stuff of the SEALs background and the notes of the complaints but sees the red flags that’s popping up.
“I’ll clear it with Vance find a flight for us.” Gibbs said, taking the folder heading up the stairs.
Vance looks up at Gibbs comes in sighing seeing the folder and gives a curious look.
“Gibbs, what’s going on?” Vance asked, handing the folder.
“SEAL reservist is in trouble.” Gibbs said, “Tony knows him so his POA reached out to Tony.”
“Looks like a lot of things have happened to this SEAL in recent years. So you can go with DiNozzo. What about the other two?” Vance asked, curiously.
“Ziva is in need of FLETC classes so she’s going there it starts tomorrow, and McGee is in need of his annual physicals and shooting so he’s doing that.” Gibbs told him.
“Okay keep me in the loop.” Vance said, as Gibbs headed out after getting the folder back.
“Flight is in three hours, time to get a bag of stuff and head to the airfield.” Tony said, as Gibbs comes down the stairs, and they go to do exactly that.
Interesting development in the chapter.
