I am warning for Discussion-Torture in this part, because Sauron is an asshole. There will also be canon levels of violence and racism. This is episode two of many planned episodes in a series - the first is "Arnica and Apple Blossoms", so you'll be very confused if you try to read this one first.

Deep within the Old Forest, the Company discovers that Azog the Defiler is once again on the hunt for Thorin and his sister-sons, having learned about the Quest for Erebor from Dáin Ironfoot. As Thorin tries to come to terms with the depths of his cousin’s betrayal, Bilbo leads the Company through the labyrinth that is the Eversprout Tunnels, teaches his Dwarven kin about the history of Hobbits, and comes to understand something new about his own magic in the process. For the depths of Green Magic are not like the heights; they are not predictable and protective and controllable through lilting song, but wild and fierce and meant to bring about change, one way or another.

It goes against everything that Bilbo was ever taught regarding the gifts of his people, to set free the magic he keeps perfectly organized in the neat little garden that is his core, and he struggles to do so, despite his resolve to embrace all aspects of the magic Yavanna blessed him with. Fortunately, as it ever has, love shall prove to be a force far more powerful than any other in Arda.

Author Notes

In this installment of “All Who Took That Road With Me”, I will continue to express how much I really do not like Dáin. Also, for as much esteem as I hold for Tolkien, I have very, very little respect for how things played out in canon. To that end, I’ve screwed with timelines and ages and geography and more – case in point, I created an entire magical system for Hobbits and another for the Dwarrow.

  1. The idea sounds awesome. Looking forward to seeing where you will take it.
