Dreaded Two-Sided Phone Coversation

I just recently posted my very first fic. Of course now I'm working on another one! Can someone point me to an example of the dreaded two sided phone conversation that should be avoided at all costs? Thanks everyone!

there’s nothing wrong with a two-sided phone conversation. It’s a one-sided phone conversation that’d be the issue.

Also, we’d ask that anyone not post a link in a case like this, so please don’t.

the issue is your POV character somehow not hearing who is the phone.

Tony looked out over the crime scene, mentally deciding how to allocate the tasks. The scene was over a large area, and they’d be here for hours. His phone vibrating pulled his attention and he answered.

”DiNozzo.” … “Yes, sir, I’m at the scene now.” … “No, we just have the normal four-person team.” … “Yes, of course additional resources would help…to a point.” … “Is there a reason why this is a rush?” … “I see.”

He hung up and took a deep breath. This day just got a lot worse.

The issue with what I wrote was that I’m in Tony’s POV, so there’s no reason the reader shouldn’t hear who is on the phone since Tony can hear it. The only reason a phone call like that would work is if that was being overheard from a third party.

Hope that answers the question about a ONE-sided phone conversation. Two-sided phone conversations are just…conversations.

PLEASE DO NOT PUT STORY LINKS IN REPLY TO THIS THREAD.

I’m giving the OP a short time to reply and then I’ll be closing the thread to further comments.

Thank you! Now I know what to avoid. Also, thank you Keira, Jilly and LadyHolder for your podcasts for providing me with the means to learn enough to even do what I have done.  Thank you!
