Information about the LA area

Hi everyone,

I just started writing my first fanfiction story, after all of you here inspired me with your awesome stories. I have run into a problem when I plotted the story, and I was hoping someone here could help me.

I am writing a story in the numb3rs fandom, and it takes place in LA. However, since I live in Europe myself and have only been to the states one time I have no idea what life in LA is like. I have been hitting google, but there are some things I can't find, like:

  • How do people get around? Do people use public transport? Or do they use their cars?
  • What are the people like? Mainly their attitudes. Does everyone mind their own business or would strange things be immediately reported.
  • Daily life. I have noticed some differences when watching American shows with daily life here in Europe, but I don't know how much of that is television and how much is the truth.

If anyone can help me with one or more of these questions, I'd be grateful. We could email or chat, I keep a weird sleeping schedule so I could adjust to whatever time zone your in.

LA is my backyard. This is a very complicated question because it really depends on the area of Los Angeles. The city itself is 498 miles and it's kind of broken up into areas.

LA is mostly car culture. About seventy-five percent of the people living and working in and around Los Angles and LA County drive. Public transportation does get used but it is pretty broken. The routes are terrible and to get anywhere it takes 3 times longer than it should. But, it does get a lot of use. There is the main LA bus line that runs the whole county, then there are smaller inter-city bus lines. There is the Metro Train system that travels much of LA County.

If your fandom is Numb3rs, then I would stick with driving because public trans is very overly complicated, (trust me. When my car broke down I had to take the bus to work. An 18 mile drive, took an hour and a half+ by bus.) Also, if you are wanting specific streets and areas consult a map. There are one-way streets everywhere in LA.

As for attitudes, it can really depend on the area. East L.A is very different than the Wilshire District, or Downtown. Most of the time people keep to themselves, some areas are friendlier than others. LA people can be brusque. There is a huge multi-cultural mixing also so keep that in mind. We are a mixture of many, many different cultures all living in the same area. Most of Downtown is busier and denser in culture and population. You will find a mix of laid back as you get closer to the beach cities and the suburbs, or the fast paced of the main city.

We love our culture. LA has a LOT of museums, The Science Center, Natural History Museums, art houses, small live theatres as well as large, many art house cinemas, comedy clubs, botanical gardens, and libraries. The Huntington Library and the Los Angeles County Library are definitely places to visit as well as our Museums.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have. If you are on FB, feel free to PM me (I'm Holly River Moon on FB).

Thank you so much! I do have some other questions, so I'll make a facebook account and look you up.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions :)
