SGA question: Purpose of the Atlantis Expedition?

Hi, all,

Was any purpose for the Atlantis expedition given anywhere in canon other than research/exploration (an attempt to figure out why the Lanteans left Earth/the Milky Way)? I've done a ton (whether boat or s**t ton is up for debate) of Googling/Binging/DuckDuckGoing, and haven't found any other reason.

Any assistance is muchly appreciated!

Well, aside from Research/Exploration, they were looking for Ancient Tech, anything that might help them with the Ori (or what was left of the Goa'uld). They had no idea what they would find out there if it would be a treasure trove of technology, or even Ancients themselves. Certainly, people like Daniel and other scientist-types might have gone for the research or exploration alone, but others would have wanted more "Big Honking Guns", as Jack was fond of saying.
