I've not been able to find any information on a character taking over the Chief of Security position after Bates was injured and went to the IOA. Does anyone know if there was someone mentioned, and I just missed it? Also, I know Bates was a Sergeant, but there are several ranks abbreviated to Sgt. (Staff Sgt, First Sgt, etc). He also seemed quite young for such a heavy position. If I have to make up a name and rank, would it be appropriate to have someone in his middle to late thirties? If so, which would be the most appropriate rank?

I always have it fall to the highest ranking NCO in my cast of characters. I often also keep Bates because screw canon (that's just me though).

It just honestly depends on the rank you give your highest NCO on Atlantis -- because it would fall to them (based on series canon) unless a junior officer is given that assignment for some reason that you could design.

I'd probably pick one of the two below:

o E-9 - Master Gunnery Sergeant(3 chevrons above 4 below, Palm Frond in center)
o E-9 - Sergeant Major (3 above 4 below, star in center)
