Christopher Pike comes online as a Sentinel in the middle of a warp core accident onboard the USS Lucas—a training ship that he'd been warned years before would be the nexus of his fate: unavoidable and life-altering. Turns out, that was true in more ways than one. Upon his arrival at Starfleet Medical, he encounters one more life-altering moment: his Guide. Now, he and his Guide have to learn to navigate the 'Fleet, the Sentinel/Guide community, and their late-in-life connection. Easy-peasy, right?

Author Notes
Ascendant Alphas: borrowed from Keira (with thanks), Ascendant Sentinels are capable of empathy nearly on the same level as a Guide. There is speculation within the S&G community that Ascendants are also capable of hiding or pushing off coming online because they are more or less able to act as their own pseudo-guide. Not much research has been done because precious few Ascendants will allow themselves to be studied, and once they bond, their Guides become fierce protectors.
Spirit animals: every online Sentinel and Guide has a spirit animal, which is a manifestation of the psionic plane. There is debate within the community over whether that means that the psionic plane is intelligent, but again, no real consensus because those capable of actually reaching the psionic plane either don’t return, or return utterly changed by the experience and unwilling or unable to describe it.
Spirit animal appearance: while all Sentinels and Guides have spirit animals, the most powerful among them have spirit animals that are capable of taking multiple forms, depending on need. The spirit animal will stay within the species they first manifested as, but can change to appear more or less intimidating depending on their chosen Sentinel’s or Guide’s need. So, a bear spirit animal could appear as a black bear in one circumstance and a polar bear in another. And no, that doesn’t mean they can appear as a red panda or koala. Neither of those are bears. Seriously.
