This story is for the competence part of the theme. I’ll admit it’s not as fleshed out as my other idea, but I’ll do my best. The main canon divergence occurs pre-canon with Shane developing a passion for dance as well as hockey, and how that influences his understanding of himself. The warning for mental health issues is because I will be addressing Ilya’s canonical depression, along with mentions of past issues for other original characters. The hate crimes/hate speech warning is there for canonical homophobia inherent in hockey culture.

When Ilya meets Shane Hollander for the first time, he doesn’t expect the other boy to offer his hand in friendship, along with his phone number. That somehow turns into him meeting Shane’s friends from Ottawa, who have nothing to do with hockey at all, and yet provide a safe space, a listening ear, and another way of seeing this beautiful boy with freckles. As Ilya finds out more of who Shane is beyond hockey, he begins to want more for himself off the ice, which might be the hardest thing of all.
