Chapter One
Shane picked up the book he’d been wanting to read. The Voyageurs didn’t have a game for four days, and no practice for three. A nice, rare few days to catch up on chores and the small hobbies that they all had. Shane had done most of his chores, cleaned up his apartment, checked on the condos, and approved some refurbishments underway in one of them. He still wasn’t sure if he was going to sell them or keep them and rent them out. They stood empty at the moment, a place for him and Ilya to meet when Ilya arrived in Montreal for games.
Sitting down, he curled his legs up on the couch, his slippers falling from his feet as he did so. He opened his book and began to read. His phone occasionally vibrated on the end table. Messages from the team, and the occasional one from Ilya. Things with the Russian had settled into something that Shane couldn’t name. Shane looked forward to seeing him, the time they spent together. The small moments as one left the city to the other arriving.
Shane jumped as there was knocking on the door. Setting aside his book, he got up and went to his front door. He looked through the peephole and saw no one there. He shook his head and headed back to his couch, picking up his book as he sat back down. “Who the hell?” he muttered as he heard knocking on the door again a few minutes later.
Shane continued to grumble as he got up and went to the door. He looked out of the peephole once more and saw no one. Instead of going back to his couch and book, he opened the door and looked out. There was no one there. Then he heard something, a small whimper; he looked down. Eyes going wide as he saw a baby basket with a baby inside on his welcome mat, along with a backpack.
“Hello?” he called out, hoping someone would answer him. He went to walk out and see if he could find someone when he saw a note with his name on it, pinned to the backpack and a freezer bag.
Shane took a moment and bent down, not seeing anyone in the hallway or at the stairs. He took the note.
Shane
Hollander, the child is Ilya Rozanovs. I know that you and he share something. I’ve seen it when he came to Montreal last time; the two of you met, and I figured it out. Don’t worry, I won’t say a word at all.
I can’t keep him; I wish I could. My parents are threatening to send me back to Japan if I do. Stupid condom slip. I’ve signed paperwork and everything needed to make sure that he can go to Rozanov. We were just a one-night stand while I was in Boston.
The baby is two days old; in the backpack are things for him to last for the rest of the day, including some frozen breast milk in the freezer bag. It should last him at least a month. Please, I don’t know how things are going to go between you and Rozanov after this, but get him to his dad at least.
That’s the only thing I ask. I’ve not been able to get in touch or through to him at all.
Rika
Shane looked at the small baby, a newborn. “Well…” he sighed, shaking his head. He picked up the basket with the baby inside and took him inside. “There’s no name for you on this,” he murmured as he put the basket down on the coffee table, before hurrying back to his door and picking up the two bags. The baby was quiet at the moment, so he stored the milk in the freezer after seeing two in the bag ready to be used. Shane was glad that he’d brought a few things for Arthur after he had been born a month ago, for when Hayden stopped by with his newborn.
He went back into the living room, the newborn now awake, staring at nothing. Shane picked up his phone, bringing up Lily’s number.
Jane – Call me NOW! Important!
Shane had no idea when Ilya would call him, but he hoped it would be soon. He knew that the man had a game tomorrow, and that he might be doing what he needed for that first. He opened the backpack, glancing at the baby as he waited for him to cry for something. Finding letters and legal documents. Shane looked through the documents, finding a declaration of birth package, along with a temporary registration number and password. An adoption document, with a post-it on it.
In case Shane Hollander wishes to adopt and be a parent to the baby.
No name for the child at the moment; needs to be registered within 30 days of birth.
Shane set everything aside and was about to bring more out when the baby started to cry. “Okay,” he said as he picked him up, feeling the heaviness of his diaper. “Let’s get you changed and see if I can warm up your bottle.”
Shane grabbed what was needed from the bag, glad that Rika, the mother, had packed a lot into the backpack. Including enough diapers to last until morning. He’d have to try and get some delivered. He was quick to change, keeping something over the baby’s lower half, and smirking when he began to pee. “See, Hayden, this is how you do it and learn not to get hit by the stream,” he muttered.
The baby continued to wail as Shane cleaned him up and put a diaper back on him. He dressed him back up in the onesie he was wearing, and checked the bag quickly for any extras. There were a couple more that would have to be ordered.
“There we go,” he said when he’d finished. Picking him up and cradling him, “It’s a good thing I’ve had practice at this,” he murmured, as he rocked the baby a little as he got up and headed to the kitchen. He began to get a bottle into the warmer that he’d kept on the side for Hayden; it was the same one that the Pikes had at home for the children.
Shane took the bottle and grabbed one of the muslin burp cloths that were in the bag and settled back down on the couch. He began to feed and had a weird thought of how calm he was with the baby in his arms. How calm he was being about the whole thing. He shook his head and paid attention to the baby again. The tiny newborn was guzzling down the milk. The baby pushed out the nipple and yawned.
“Done then,” he murmured, checking how much was drunk, “25ml, not bad,” he added, making a mental note to write down the amount and time he had drunk his milk. He settled him against his shoulder and began to burp him, getting a little burp with no spit up.
The baby was back asleep, now in Shane’s arms, when his phone started to ring. The noise was loud, but it didn’t wake the baby as he answered.
“Hollander,” Ilya greeted, “What is it?”
“So, I had something left on my doorstep that belongs to you,” he said cryptically.
“Like what?” Ilya asked, “Don’t be cryptic.”
“A baby,” he sighed, “A baby was left on my doorstep, of my actual apartment, not the condos. My apartment, Rozanov.”
“There is no possible way that I have a child; they would be here in Boston, not in Montreal,” Ilya dismissed it.
“Remember a woman called Rika,” he said as he observed the baby, “Would be Asian,” he added.
Ilya was quiet for a few moments. “I remember her,” he said, “She was nice, I was…” he trailed off.
“It would have been December last year,” Shane said quietly.
“Da, December, flight canceled to Montreal, I was angry, went out, met Rika. She was nice,” he said, “There is a baby?”
“Yes, a little boy. She hasn’t named him; that’s up to you. He’s been changed, eaten, and now sleeping. He has your lips and nose,” he said. “He has dark hair, but it’s slightly curled,” he added.
“Send me a picture, please?” he asked, almost sounding like he was begging.
“Yeah,” he said, as he quickly took a picture of the sleeping baby. “You have a day to yourself after the game?” he asked.
“Da, I will come soon; I need to pack and-” he began.
“You need to play,” Shane interrupted him.
“No, I do not. This is a family emergency; LeClaire and Marly will understand,” he told him.
“Sent,” Shane told him, “And are you sure you’d be able to get away? I don’t want you-“
“Shane,” he said, causing Shane to freeze, hearing his given name coming from Ilya, shocking him. “Shane, I am going to come. It will be fine; I will be there soon, in a few hours. There is a flight leaving Boston in an hour; I will be on it,” he added.
“Alright, and Ilya,” he said, using Ilya’s name, “She knew we’re something.”
Ilya was silent for a few moments. “Okay,” he said, “I will be there soon.”
Ilya said goodbye and ended the call. Looking at the picture of the baby in Shane’s arms. He couldn’t see Shane’s face, just a muscled bare arm holding the baby. Dark curls, eyes closed, but the little nose so much like his own, but a tiny form of it. Lips that reminded him of his Mama, because his face, his lips, his eyes, his hair, all came from her. “A son,” he murmured, shaking his head. He got off the bench he had walked over to call Shane as soon as he had seen the message.
“Yo, Rozy,” Marlow waved at him, “Coming back out yet?” he asked.
“Need to talk to you and coach, private,” he replied as he looked over at LeClaire, “Now, I need to go soon. Flight leaves in an hour,” he added, his words quieter.
LeClaire looked at his team’s captain and nodded, “Okay, talk to me,” he said.
“Office, private, please,” Ilya said. Normally, he wouldn’t care who overheard what was going on. But this also included Shane, or rather his Montreal Jane.
LeClaire nodded, “Marlow, off ice, with us,” he said, waving a hand to get the man off the ice.
Marlow skated over, putting on his skate guards. He looked at his coach and captain. “Everything alright?” he asked, seeing the serious look on Ilya’s face.
“I need to talk to both, office, please,” he said. “I do not have time for messing,” he added as he took the lead. Ilya had already taken off his skates and was walking around in his socks. His skates dangling from a hand.
Marlow nodded and quickly followed his captain and coach to the small office LeClaire kept at the practice rink. The door closed, and Ilya began pacing. “Rozy, what’s going on, brother?” he asked him.
Ilya stopped. “I have a child, baby,” he blurted out.
“What?!” Marlow exclmained, “A…”
“Baby, newborn, look!” he said, as he pulled out his phone and showed the picture that Shane had sent to him.
“Jane?” Marlow asked, “Is that who the mother is? Why didn’t you tell us?” he frowned at his friend.
“Not Jane, but the baby is safe with Jane in Montreal. I need to get there. She is alone with the baby, and it is mine; I remember the mother. Rika is a nice woman who does not want fame or money; she was nice to talk to. Was missing Jane, and I slept with Rika. And before I ask, Jane and I are casual. But Rika found out about Jane, gave baby to Jane,” he said, his accent thickening and his words becoming clipped.
“Okay, let me get this straight, you had a one-night stand. She got pregnant. Instead of contacting you about the baby. She went to your Montreal girl and gave the baby to her.”
“Montreal Jane is not a woman, is a man, which is why secret,” Ilya said. “It is worrying. I know my Jane will be worried when it hits him. He is anxious and worried about most things,” he said, a soft smile appearing on his face.
Marlow looked at his best friend, someone he considered a brother, and said, “You love him,” he said, like the world finally made sense when it came to Montreal Jane.
Ilya paused, the smile going from his face. “We can not… We can not. It is complicated, dangerous. Russia, league, and more,” he said, shaking his head, “it would be… hard to be anything but casual.”
Marlow snorted, “Rozy, do you like this guy a lot? Is he worth risking it for?” he asked him, “Don’t think of anything else, but do you think it?”
Ilya looked at him and nodded, “Da, I would risk all for him. But we ca-“
“Fuck that, there’s now a baby involved, and someone, the baby’s mom, even sent your baby to this man, to your Jane, because they knew you were something,” he pointed out.
“I’ll get you sorted for paternity leave,” LeClaire said, already having the forms out and filling in what he could. “Is there anything I should know?” he asked, giving the man a pointed look.
Ilya sat down hard on a chair. “Who Jane is, is going to be big; it is not going to be pretty if this gets out,” he added.
“Who is it, Rozy?” Marlow asked, “Who the fuck are you with that hangs over you like this?”
“I can’t, not without permission,” Ilya shook his head.
“Then get it, if we know we might be able to help better,” LeClaire said, shaking his head.
Ilya left the room, calling Shane once more. “Malysh,”
“Ilya, is everything okay?” Shane asked, and Ilya could hear the concern in his voice.
“I told them that Jane is man,” he admited, closing his eyes, “I did not tell them who, but they are asking. Marly and LeClaire, they are good people. I will be on paternity for a bit too.”
“Okay, are you… we’re not-” Shane cut off, “I don’t even know what we are,” he admited.
“We talk about that when I get there, yes?” he suggested.
“Okay, okay,” he murmured, “Tell them but-“
“Make sure that they don’t tell anyone. I know Malysh, I know, they will not,” he promised, hoping that he would be proved correct. He didn’t think LeClaire or Marlow would say anything, but he knew that there was always that chance.
“I’ll see you soon. I don’t think I’ll be able to pick you up from the airport. I don’t have a baby seat for the baby,” he stated, “And he really needs a name.”
“We will think of something, if… you want to be part of it,” Ilya said, giving him an out.
“We’ll talk when you get here,” Shane told him again, “Just… get here as soon as you can.”
“Okay, I will,” he nodded, “I will be there soon.”
“See you then, Ilya,” Shane told him as he ended the call.
Ilya put his phone away and went back into the small office. “I ahve permission to tell you,” he said as he closed the door. “Jane and I met in December 2008. He came over, said my name, and then said, I’m Shane Hollander. We were stupid teenagers; we got through the International Prospect Cup,” he began, seeing the open-mouthed shock. “We met again at the draft, then the 2009 Cup. Just before rookie season, the CCM shoot. We kissed first time, and that was how it began.”
“Shane mother fucking Hollander?!” Marlow hissed out, eyes still wide.
“Da,” he nodded, “And it’s Shane Masafumi Hollander, not Mother Fucking,” he grinned a little, having learned what the MF in Shane’s name meant. “The Masafumi is one word, but idiot Canadians put a space,” he added.
“Huh?!”
“Everyone keeps using the MF to mean Mother fucking; it is not. It is Masafumi, and it’s one name, not two,” Ilya repeated.
“I don’t… I don’t really care about that,” he said, “But Shane Hollander? You have a kid, and they’re with Hollander?”
“Da,” he nodded, “Keep up, Marly,” he snorted, “Shane has the baby. He was left on Shane’s doorstep. He has an apartment in Montreal, secured; I don’t think he has realized that yet. That someone got close. He likes privacy and security. I need to get there; things need to be done. I have a son that is waiting for me in Montreal, and I would like to meet him soon.”
“Keep me updated on what you and Hollander are planning on doing, if that’s coming out, just you taking over parenthood, or whatever,” LeClaire said.
“You know the team’s got your back,” Marlow said as he looked at him.
“I know you’ve been looking into a green card, so we’ll make sure the ball is rolling fast on that.”
“Canadian,” Ilya said, “I want a Canadian passport.”
“Okay, we’ll talk to them about that; it’s going to take a while. And you need to decide about your family back in Russia; I know things aren’t too good for anyone in the LGBTQ+ over there,” LeClaire added.
“My father is sick; it is… not going to be good. The fallout, if I come out. So I can not do it, not yet. I need to talk to Shane about what is going on and what we are going to do and be going forward. It is complicated,” he added, nodding a few times.
“Get going,” LeClaire said, “You need to pack and head to the airport still.”
“Yes,” Ilya nodded again, “I do. Shane and the baby are waiting, I-“
“Send pics of the baby, yeah, and what do you want to tell the rest of the team?” Marlow asked his friend about the team.
“That there is a baby and mama is in Montreal. They will think it’s Jane, but that is… okay,” he said as he looked at Marlow.
“Right,” Marlow nodded and smiled, “Pics tho, they’ll want to see.”
“I will send some when I get there,” Ilya nodded.
“He kinda looks like a mix of you and Hollander,” Marlow commented on the picture he had seen earlier.
“Da, I think why I slept with Rika. I was missing Shane,” he murmured, “I need to shower and change, will talk again later, when in Montreal.”
“I’ll get the paperwork sorted,” LeClaire said once more, “Good luck,” he finished.
Ilya nodded and headed out to get changed and head out. He had a flight to catch.
Chapter Two
Shane put the baby back into the basket. He had sent off an order for a few things to be delivered that night; it was just after dinner time, and Shane hadn’t eaten. Instead, he was waiting for Ilya to arrive so they could eat together. “Ilya really is going to have to give you a good name,” he said, as he looked down at the sleeping baby. He’d fed him once more, noting down what he had drunk and the time.
Shane looked up as someone knocked on his door. It wasn’t time for the delivery, and Ilya would be another hour at the very least. He headed over and wondered if the mother had come back. He looked out the peephole and sighed; it was Hayden, and he had Arthur with him. He sighed a little before he opened the door.
“Now’s not really a good time,” Shane said, wondering if he should let the man inside.
“Sorry,” Hayden winced, “Jackie is… having a moment. I got her mom and brother over there, and I thought…” he trailed off.
Shane bit back a sigh and let them inside. “Sorry,” he said.
“No, no, I’m sorry,” Hayden replied, shaking his head, a large duffle on his shoulder, “I should have called and asked, but… I didn’t even think. I’ve been looking after Arthur most of the day, and the twins are being little shits at the moment. My mom has come to take them so Jackie can have some quiet. She’s not doing well at the moment; post-partum is fucking a lot of things up. Finally been able to get her to see someone, but it’s hard for her to be aroun-” he stopped as he reached the living room and saw the basket on the table. “Shane… why is there a baby on your coffee table?”
“And this might be why it wasn’t a good time,” Shane said as he walked over and looked down at the baby.
“A baby? Who’s? Yours?” Hayden asked, eyes wide as he watched Shane check on the baby, much like he did Arthur and the twins when they had been babies.
“Not really,” Shane said, wincing; he didn’t know if he would even be able to call the baby he had been looking after for the last couple of hours his at all. It was all up to Ilya after all.
“Not really, then why do you have them?” he asked, frowning as he went and sat down.
“Fuck, this is hard,” he muttered as he sat down beside Hayden, only to find Arthur now in his arms a second later. “Hey Arthur,” he murmured at the barely awake baby.
“Right, from the damn top, who’s baby?”
“Ilya Rozanov’s,” Shane answered.
Hayden sat there, blinking as he processed the name. It took a few minutes for his mind to catch up as he choked out, “Ilya Rozanov’s?” he said, not raising his voice, just processing it all.
Shane nodded. “The bio mom is giving up her rights. Asked that I get him to his dad, but that… she knew we are friends,” he said, carefully. “You know what, fuck that, not friends, something,” he said, “Not just friends or maybe rivals with benefits, or maybe we are friends. We just never really labeled anything that we are to each other. THE NHL tends to do that for us. They painted us as Rivals without even asking if that’s what we wanted,” he snorted, startling Arhtur a little as the baby jumped in his arms. “It’s okay Artie,” he murmured, “just finding it odd that someone else has so much control over who I can be friends or more with,” he said, patting his bum gently as he held him with his other arm.
“So… why here? Why not in Boston?” Hayden asked.
“Read the letter, that one there right next to the basket,” Shane told him, gesturing to the one that was on the bag.
Hayden reached out, stopping to get a good look at the baby. “He kinda looks a bit like you,” he commented.
“Yeah,” Shane said, “I think the mother might be Japanese; she said something about being forced back should she try and keep her son. Which is fucked up.”
“Yeah,” he said, taking the letter and beginning to read. “You and Rozanov are something?” he asked.
“We are; he’s heading this way, should be landing in about an hour, I think,” he said, “I can’t remember what time he said.”
“Right, which is why you want me not here,” Hayden said, “I get it, I’ll leave when he comes, I’ll see if-“
“No, I’ll talk to Ilya; we can still talk, and maybe you can watch the baby while you’re here while we do talk, if you don’t mind?” Shane suggested, not really wanting to kick Hayden out of his apartment. He knew that Jackie was struggling a lot with having Arthur around. Often asking family to be with her. She was scared of what she was thinking, and Shane couldn’t blame her.
“If that’s fine, it’s fine,” Hayden said, “Maybe I can see what Rozanov is really like and not how he is on the ice. Cus I gotta say, Shane, if he’s like that off the ice, then I don’t know what you see in him.”
“He is different, still an asshole,” Shane said fondly, “But-“
“He’s your kind of asshole, right?” Hayden asked him, eyebrow raised as he looked at his friend.
“Yeah,” Shane laughed lightly, “Yeah, he is. He gets me, you know. Not even my parents understand me half the time, but that’s more because my Mom has these expectations of me. Asian player in a white-dominated sport. I’m a role model, according to her. For me, I just want to play Hockey. And Ilya doesn’t treat me like Shane Mother Fucking Hollander; I’m just me to him. Weak backhand, second best player.”
“Sorry, first, you’re leading in stats at the moment,” Hayden grinned at him.
“Maybe, but he’s a damn good player,” he said.
“The best, probably,” Hayden whispered. “You said that the day he won the Cup,” he added, “You were… already together?”
“Yeah, we were something. We… were having a hard time with communication around then,” he admited, “We had it out a bit in Vegas, during the awards, but it wasn’t until after that things settled down for us again,” he told him, being honest.
Hayden nodded, “Okay,” he said, “You need to sort it out, because a baby is now involved. You need to figure out what you want to do.”
Shane nodded as Hayden finished reading the letter.
“I know, Ilya does too. But first, he should at least meet his son,” he added quietly.
“Yeah, do that, and I’ll see about getting a few things of Arthur’s he doesn’t need anymore. He’s tiny considering Rozanov’s size.”
“5 lb 6 oz,” he said.
“That’s low,” Hayden frowned, “Ruby was that, and Jade was 5 lb 4 oz. And they were low because they were twins.”
“Rika, the mother wrote that the baby had low birth weight. She’s only small herself, so that might be why. But she’s given me the number for the midwife for the baby here in Montreal,” he said, “I’ve been reading through all the papers she’s sent with the baby. I need to get in touch with them by tomorrow. He’s not going to be able to fly for at least the first month, to make sure he’s putting on weight. Will need to contact someone in Boston for Ilya to carry on with his care. That’s all been noted down.”
“So there are some logistics to go over. It’s going to end up coming out, you know that.”
“I’m hoping not, Hayd, this could… Ilya is Russian; it’s not good over there at the moment, laws ahve come in that make things illegal. He’ll… end up arrested and in prison at best, and worst… we don’t want to find out,” Shane said, his voice lower and fearful.
Hayden nodded, “Alright,” he said, “For now, I’m hungry,” he added, getting up.
“I was waiting for Rozanov to get here to eat,” Shane admited.
“What have you got here for food?” he asked, standing up and looking down at Shane holding Arthur.
“A lot. I did a shop yesterday and got some things in,” Shane answered, “I didn’t know I would be hosting you and Ilya,” he added.
“Don’t worry, if we need anything, I don’t mind going out and grabbing anything needed,” Hayden told him, “It will also give you both some time alone to talk.”
Shane nodded, “Thanks. I have a few things for the baby coming,” He hated going out; he was often recognised when he was doing the most mundane things.
Hayden headed to the kitchen and began to go through what Shane had available. “You can make something with pasta,” he said.
“There’s more than pasta in there,” Shane called out, “Just because you love it doesn’t mean everyone else does.”
“But it can go with so much,” Hayden whined, though there was amusement within it.
Shane rolled his eyes and looked down at Arthur. “I don’t know what’s going to happen when Rozanov gets here. I just hope… that things turn out okay. I already like the baby, and it’s been a few hours.”
“Everything okay?” Hadyen asked him, yawning.
“Yeah, yeah, everythings fine,” Shane said, shaking his head and holding out Arthur as the baby in the basket began to cry.
“Want me to get him?” Hayden asked, as he looked at the newborn.
“No, I’ll do it, might need changing, or just wants some cuddles,” Shane said as Hayden took Arthur back. Shane didn’t want Hayden holding the baby until after Ilya had a chance to. It was his baby, his son.
“Sure,” Hayden nodded, holding his son, who began to whine in time with the newborn that Shane was now checking and holding. “Ah, when one cries the other will cry,” he said, shaking his head. “That’s one thing I really don’t miss when the twins were babies,” he added, sitting down to calm Arhtur by rocking him and shushing him.
Shane had to change the baby before settling on the couch with Hayden. He glanced at his phone, seeing that Ilya had landed and was on his way with a rental car. He should be about twenty minutes. “Ilya’s almost here,” he murmured, not realizing that he’d called Ilya by his given name.
Hayden looked at him and rolled his eyes. “He’s gone, Artie,” he said as he kissed his now-quiet son on the forehead. “He’s totally gone on the man.” His voice was so quiet that Shane hadn’t heard him.
Shane held the baby as he went into the kitchen and started to see what he could cook for the three of them. He was hungry; he would normally just have one of the pre-prepared meals that he’d done for himself. “I have no idea what to cook; I’ve never done that for your dad before. Looks like pasta something,” he muttered to himself, shaking his head as he looked at the now content baby in his arms.
“Oh, Katsu Chicken Curry, I have everything,” he murmured as he began to pull things out of cupboards and fridge to make it. “Hayden,” he called out, hoping the man heard him; he didn’t want to yell too loudly in case it startled the baby.
Hayden walked in, Arthur sleeping fully in his arms. “Yeah?” he asked.
“How about Katsu Chicken Curry? I don’t have it often; hell, I think it’s been a year, maybe even two, since I have. Mom never makes it, and it seems pointless to make it just for myself,” he added as he turned around and faced his friend.
“Then do it, let’s put both the babies down. I have a baby monitor with me that I can set up so we can work and listen in just in case,” Hayden said.
“It’s been a while since you and me have cooked together like this,” Shane said as he and Hayden went into the living room to set the two babies up. “I need something better for him,” he murmured.
“Yeah, when we were living together. Oh, I think we have a spare bassient at home. I can ask JJ to get it, or maybe Mike, Jackie’s brother, can. He’s nearby; I think he was planning on stopping by as well to be with Jackie,” he suggested.
“Won’t that bring up some questions?” Shane asked him.
“The beauty of Mike is that he will keep quiet about shit. He’s a good guy and gay,” he added, “And no I’m not trying to set you up, Mike has his eye on someone at the moment,” he said, holding up a hand before Shane could say anything, “But he knows to keep his mouth shut about certian things around hockey players, they’re fucking homophobic assholes most of the time,” he said, “Now, I can give him a call, say emergency secret shit and ask him to grab things from the spare room. We have a lot of the twins’ things in there. I would get your own car seat though, ours is a few years old, and it’s always best to get one of the safer newer ones.”
“Alright, if he can keep things quiet. I don’t want people to know, hell didn-” he cut himself off.
Hayden laughed, “Want me to know?” he finished for him, “I get it dude.”
“Sorry,” Shane told him, wincing a little, “I just-“
“Hey, it’s fine,” Hayden told him again, “I get it, really. Some of us overshare, and want to tell the world, and some of us can’t do that, for many reasons.”
“When he won the cup, I really wished I could be there to congratulate him, I really did,” he said softly.
“I’m sorry,” Hayden told him as he set up the travel bassient he had for Arthur and placed him inside.
Shane jolted at that, “What for?”
“For not being a good friend,” Hayden answered.
“Hayd,” Shane frowned, “You are.”
Hayden shook his head, “No, I’m not, if I was, then you might have confinded in me before I found Ilya Rozanov’s baby in your apartment,” he said, trying for almost joking tone, “but seriously, Shane, if I was better, you may have at least told me you’re gay, I don’t blame for not telling me about Rozanov, it’s a big thing.”
“Yeah, it still is, I know he’s told Marlow and LeClaire, but he’s had to because of the baby,” Shane said, “So, three more people know,” he stated, “I… I don’t even know what to make of it all.”
“Nothing for it now, you need to speak to Rozanov, decide where you both stand. Look after that delightful little baby,” he grinned.
“Yeah,” Shane nodded. “I’m going to make a start.”
“I’ll call Mike,” Hayden said, raising his phone and wiggling it. He began the call as Shane headed into the kitchen. He began to set up the wireless baby monitor
“Hey, Hayhay,” came Mike’s playful voice.
“Hey, sorry to call out the blue like this, but I need a really big favor from you, and to keep it from everything, this is really important, and could be life and death if things get out,” Hayden said quietly.
“What the hell, Hayden?” Mike said, his tone changing.
“Mike, this is serious. I wouldn’t ask anything of you like this; you need to keep this from Jackie. I’m not the one in trouble, and really not really trouble, but it could be if the wrong people find out,” he said, knowing he wasn’t making much sense.
“What the fuck,” Mike cursed, “Okay, tell me what you need, and one day soon, like tomorrow, you’re going to ahve to tell me what the hell, man,” he said.
“I need you to go to mine, sneak in, use the back door, you’ll be able to use the back stairs up to the second floor and get a few things from the spare room. There is a bag in there with some old clothes of the twins, newborn stuff, make sure gender neutral colors, it’s a boy, so,” he stopped.
“This is the strangest fucking thing you’ve ever asked me,” he said. “Right, anything else?”
“Yeah, one of the baskets, they’ve got very little for the baby here, and I do mean a small backpack of things. A basket for the baby at the moment, which-“
“Right, I’ll grab a load of things, and a few extras. Need formula? Diapers?” he asked.
“No, we’ve got that covered; a delivery is coming in for that. And a few things,” Hayden said, as he looked at the list Shane had written down and the checks that were next to some things. I’m going to send you a picture; it’s a list. See what you can get from it. I’ll send over some money if you have to buy anything,” he added, as he went into his banking app and sent some before sending over a snapshot of the list.
“Right.” Mike snorted, “You know a lot of places are going to be closed. I might be able to get some of the things on the list, others of course from yours.”
“Please, what you can,” he said, “And thanks,” he added.
“Try and tell me what you can about this, because I’m confused as fuck. I’ll be there as soon as I can, might be able to make it to one of the places,” he murmured more to himself, “See ya Hayhay,” he said as he ended the call.
Hayden shook his head and smiled; his brother-in-law was a good one to have in your corner. He took the baby monitor into the kitchen and began to help Shane prepare everything for the Katsu Chicken Curry. Ilya should arrive before they truly got started, but they could at least make a start.
Chapter Three
Ilya pulled up in the parking lot of Shane’s apartment building. Shane had given him detailed instructions on where to park. He’d not been to Shane’s actual apartment building, though that had been the plan the next time Boston played Montreal. “A son,” he murmured to himself, still not sure what to believe. He got out, grabbing his bag as he headed to the building and up to Shane’s floor. He knocked on the door and waited to be let in.
The door opened, and Hayden Pike was standing there. Ilya stood still. “Come on,” Hayden said, gesturing for him to come in. “Shane’s making dinner for the three of us, and I know about a few things, not everything. I was a suprise visit.”
“Okay,” he murmured as he walked into the house. He saw a basket and a bassient.
“The one in the bassinet is mine. The basket is your son. And before you ask, I haven’t held him; only Shane has. He’s asleep now, but pick him up and cuddle him,” he said, “Or maybe wait for Shane, so he can see.”
Ilya nodded absently and moved toward the basket. The baby was tiny, so small considering the baby that Victor had a year ago. “So tiny,” he murmured.
“Yeah,” Hayden said, “I’ll go and get Shane,” he added as he headed to the kitchen. “Hey, Rozanov is here,” he said, as he looked at his friend. “I’ll take over, and yes, I know what I’m doing,” he said before the other could even ask. “We’ve made this a few times together, and I’ve made it alone too.”
Shane nodded, washing his hands and letting Hayden take over cooking the chicken. He walked into the living room, seeing Ilya standing there, just staring at the baby.
“He looks like you,” Ilya said as he looked over at Shane.
“He has your lips, your nose, and your curls,” Shane said. “There are bits of you in there just as much as his mother’s,” he added. “I’ve got a lot of information from her, a lot. There are calls that need to be made, things to buy for him. And he needs a name; she didn’t give him one, she did give him a temporary one, for the hospital records, but I think you should name him,” he said, walking over and placing a hand on his arm. “We have a lot to talk about, but rest up a bit, meet your son and have something to eat. I hope you don’t mind Hayden being here. Jackie, his wife, has postpartum depression after Arhtur’s birth. It’s been difficult for them. Hayden brings Arthur here when Jackie is having a worse time than normal. He stays in the spare room.”
“That is fine, I will not…” he trailed off, “We do need to talk, seriously about everything.”
“I know, we need to plan what is going to happen, how you want to handle all of this. I don’t-“
“Talk later, can I hold him?” he asked, wanting to hold the tiny baby.
“Of course, he’s your son,” Shane said as he went over and picked the baby up, being careful to not wake him. He handed him over to Ilya. “Your son.”
Ilya nodded and took him in his arms. They heard a click of a camera. The two looked up after a few moments to see Hayden there.
“I thought you would like a picture of the first time you held your son,” he said, “I’ll send it to Shane to send it to you.”
“Thank you,” Ilya nodded as Hayden disappeared back into the kitchen.
“He’s a good man,” Shane said quietly, “He’s trying to get a few things together for the baby, since we… we don’t have anything.”
“Mikhail,” Ilya said, “If that is okay?” he asked as he looked at Shane.
“Mikhail,” Shane tested it out, smiling, “yeah, sounds good. And really, it’s up to you. So Michail Ilyich Rozanov,” he nodded, “Sounds really good.”
“You know Russian naming?” Ilya frowned.
“I… I looked it up earlier,” he admited quietly, “Like I know your full name is Ilya Grigoryevich Rozanov,” he added.
Ilya nodded and smiled, “It is,” he said.
“Come on, sit down,” Shane said, gesturing to the couch, “I should help Hayd with the rest of dinner,” he added.
“Thank you,” Ilya murmured, looking back down at his son. He sat on the couch carefully, like he was afraid to move too much.
“If he cries, he might want food. He’s just been changed, and from what Rika has written, he’s eating every two to three hours, about 30-40ml each time. Which is about right for his age. He’s small, on the really small size, but she said to get in touch with the midwife; she left the number, and she had told the midwife that she was giving the child to the father,” Shane told him quickly. “Yeah, I’ll go help Hayd now,” he said as he hurried from the room and into the kitchen.
“You okay?” Hayden asked him, frowning at the sudden entrance. He’d thought he would be finishing making the dinner alone.
“Yeah,” he said, blushing.
“Oh, ohhhh,” Hayden said as a smirk appeared on his face. “If you were a woman, I’d say your ovaries have exploded,” he snickered.
“Fuck off,” Shane said, huffing at his friend, “He’s fucking… fuck Hayd, he’s sexy as fuck and holding his son…” he groaned, “It’s just…”
“Yeah, I get it,” Hayden said, “In a way, I fall more in love with Jackie when she’s holding the kids. She just looks so much more radiant and gorgeous than ever when she does,” he said, sappily.
“Hmm,” Shane hummed, peeking through to the living room as he could hear a murmuring of Russian.
“Come and get this finished, so we can eat. Hopefully Mike will come by with what I asked him to. He might want an explanation; it’s been a really weird request,” he snorted.
Shane paled a little, “I… don’t know what to tell him.”
“Talk it over instead of being in here, go. I know it’s not going to be a quick conversation, but you can at least start it. I don’t mind finishing up here,” Hayden replied, giving him a look.
Shane nodded and headed back into the living room. “Hey,” he said as he went over, “Sorry, checking on the food, Hayden’s got it covered. Should be done in about ten to twenty minutes.”
Ilya nodded. “I am grateful,” he said softly, “That you took him in. I do not know what I should do. What… we should do, if you want to be in this with me. I would understand if not.”
Shane settled on the couch beside him, looking down at the tiny baby, “I love him already,” he admited quietly, “I would love nothing more than to be in his and your life. I know we say we’re causual, just fucking but… I don’t think its been that at all, do you?” he said, chosing his words carefully and not looking at Ilya as he spoke. Not wanting to see the possibility of rejection on his face.
“I tried; it was dangerous for me,” Ilya said quietly.
“I know, but there are things we can do to… mitigate them. It’s going to be hard, but I think we could do it,” he said, finally looking up, seeing the hope in Ilya’s hazel eyes.
“I… would like to, but I do not think living separately will be a good idea.”
“Then he leaves Montreal,” Hayden said as he looked out. “Dinner’s almost done, just gotta plate,” he said as the two looked up at him.
“What do you mean, I leave Montreal? I can’t do that,” Shane said, eyes wide.
Hayden shook his head. “The team is a bunch of homophobic bastards and their glorious leader, our fucked up coach,” he said, “Do you really want to come out to those idiots? You know exactly how they’re going to react, and it ain’t going to be good. JJ will be okay, maybe Mitty as well, but the rest, not a fucking chance.”
Ilya looked at Shane, “Is that true?”
Shane nodded, “It is. Theriault has always been a racist, homophobic bag of dicks, and those that toe the line with him are plentiful on the team. I’ve tried to do something about it, even gone to management, but… they refuse to do anything. Montreal is a cesspit for it all, if I’m being honest. I love the fans, but I’m beginning to hate the team. They don’t want to listen; I get called a diversity hire half the fucking time,” he muttered, taking a shuddering breath. He’d never admited to any of it aloud before. He’d always kept it quiet, close to his chest. He didn’t want to disappoint his mom by saying anything bad about her favorite team.
“Might be time to talk to your agent about what can be done, Shane,” Hayden said, “Now come and get dinner, oh, and Rozanov, don’t worry about leaving the baby in here. I have a monitor that will listena nd watch them. I’ve just moved it to the table, so you’ll be able to see, and so will I,” he said as he turned to look at the Russian properly.
“Thank you… Why are you-“
“I kinda crashed this,” Hayden said, “Having a kid is overwhelming; having one thrust on you out of the blue like this has to be even more so. I’ll cut you some slack; my brother-in-law will be stopping by. He’s getting a few things for you for the baby, and have you come up with a name yet?” he asked.
“Mikhail,” Ilya said.
Hayden nodded. “Good name,” he said, “Come on, dinner, put him down for a moment. And yeah, I know how hard that is.”
Ilya nodded and put Mikhail into the basket; he murmured a little before settling. Ilya followed Shane into the kitchen and to the small table that was set up for dinner. He sat down as Shane and Hayden brought everything over along with drinks.
“Thank you.” Ilya smiled a little, feeling off with Hayden being there and being nice.
“Welcome,” Hayden and Shane said, snorting a little as they dished out and the three of them began to eat. Ilya looked to the baby monitor, which was a video one as well as sound. The two babies shifted a little in their sleep, an occasional arm moving and murmurs and huffs of air.
“It’s hard not to watch constantly,” Hayden said, understanding in his voice.
“Da,” Ilya agreed, “I did not… know what it would be like.”
“No one does until it happens, until you become a parent. Then you find this tiny life is in your hands. What you do shapes them. What you need to do as a parent is just love them and be there as much as you can. Jackie is a teacher, languages; she knows four languages. Smart as anything,” Hayden said proudly, “No doubt when she learns about you, she’ll be wanting to learn Russian, so be prepared for questions. But she stopped work for the most part, takes on private students now, instead. But I know she’d like to go back to work. Trying to get someone in that will be able to take care of the kids when she works. I want that for her.”
Shane nodded a few times, “I heard her about wanting to go back.”
“Hmm,” Hayden hummed, eating a few bites before continuing, “Don’t think just because you ahve a kid, that your life goes on hold. That you ahve to be there for them twenty-four seven. We’d all like that, but jobs are needed and time for yourself is always needed. I think Jackie and I would have gone crazy with the twins if we didn’t have at least two days a month for date nights or even the random kicking out of the house when our parents, or Shane, came over to watch them to give us two some alone time, some time to just be Jackie and Hayden again.”
Ilya listened as Hayden talked about being a dad. He knew that the man had three children, even if Ilya himself joked there were more. He’d seen some footage of the twins when they were very little at the rink with their father. He could see the man was a good dad, that loved his children.
Hayden’s phone began to ring as they finished. “Mike,” he said as he answered. “Hey.”
“Hey, tell me where to go, got as much as I could, and yeah, I raided one of the shops that was still open. Got a bit, but the rest is going to be up to your friend. And please tell me you have an explanation for this. I had to hide in a closet to avoid Mom and Jackie, and I’ve not had to do that since I was a teen,” he joked.
“Sorry,” Hayden laughed, “And yeah, glad you’re back out of the closet,” he smiled as he added, “As for why, it’s really damn complicated,” he said, looking between Shane and Ilya.
“He can be trusted?” Ilya asked quietly.
Hayden looked at him, “Muting a sec, talking to the ones involved.”
Alright,” Mike said.
Hayden muted for a moment. “He can,” he said. “I know that you don’t know him. But he’s kept a lot for me. When Jackie and I hit a rough patch, he’s never told his sister anything I’ve told him. And I know he holds secrets for her too. He can keep it, and won’t breathe a damn word to anyone,” Hayden told the two of them.
“Then okay, he will have to help bring things up and see,” Ilya said, looking at Shane, who nodded in agreement.
“Mike’s a good man, and a good friend,” Shane said softly, as he looked over at Ilya.
“Now, I’m going to clean up, and you two can go and talk. I know you both need to. I’ll tell Mike to head over here. I got an Uber here, so the spot I rent here is free at the moment. I know you have two,” Hayden said, referring to the parking lot below the building. There were at least three bays to most of the apartments.
“Thanks,” Shane told him, “And I ca-
“No, you can’t; you and Rozanov have something a lot more important to go over. And take my advice and call your agent about it all, and about leaving Montreal. No doubt as soon as they find out that you’re gay, or Bi,” he said with a head tilt.
“Not sure,” Shane confessed, “Never really thought about it.”
“Well, whatever you are, it doesn’t matter. As soon as they know you’re dating a guy, they’re going to get rucking brutail and worse,” Hayden said, “Now, go and figure shit out. I’ll tell Mike to come here, and clean up. I’ll turn the monitor off, aswell, so it’s priavte. Between you both and the babies,” he said, turning the monitor off and starting to grab plates and dishes to take to the sink.
Ilya and Shane shared a look before getting up and heading to the living room. Both babies were still sleeping, though Shane knew that they would be waking for something to eat soon.
“I do not know where to start,” Ilya said, “We have never really talked about anything like this before.”
“I know,” Shane said, “But holding Mikhail, being with him for the last few hours, I… don’t want to lose that. I really don’t. I know he’s your son, but…” he trailed off and brought out the papers that Rika had added to the file that she had left for them.
“Did you meet her?” Ilya asked as Shane began to spread the papers out.
Shane shook his head, “No, but I believe she was there until I took him inside. I didn’t open the door until the second time someone knocked on it. I… she put something else in here, in case we both want to be his dads.”
Ilya nodded and looked at the papers, “Suragocy?” he said, sounding out the unfamiliar word.
“Surrogate,” Shane nodded, “She wrote that we could have it done like that. She still gives up her parental rights, but it’s written that she had the child for us; she’s not expecting anything still. But she put that it might be better for us to have it seem like that was the case rather than a one-night stand with a condom slip. She loves her son, but knows that he’d be taken from her if she tries to keep him. Her parents are strict, and it does sound like she’s under their thumb a lot. She is a year younger than us,” he added.
“She would need to meet us again for the signing,” Ilya said.
Shane nodded, “Yeah, she did leave a way fr us to contact her, if we needed to. She’s also put her family history in there as well, so that we have that, in case it’s needed too. But there are possibilities. If we do the surrogacy thing though, it might mean coming out.”
“Or at least to those that mean something to us. My team means a lot, I get along with them all, but…” he trailed off thinking about Shane’s team and what Hayden had said.
“I think only JJ to be told, if that’s the case. Jackie as well, of course, and my parents,” Shane said.
“I got a new agent two years ago. I got my green card for the USA last month. I am safer now. I am applying for citizenship, but it will take years for that.”
Okay, that’s… that’s really good,” Shane said, feeling relieved that was the case.
“If we come out, we are okay,” Ilya told him, taking a hand. “We keep quiet, let people who matter know, but we are both Mikhail’s parents,” he said.
Shane smiled and nodded, “Yeah, yeah, we are.”
“Mikhail Ilyich Shayevich Rozanov-Hollander,” Ilya said softly.
Chapter Four
They brought Mike into the secret as he brought what he could from the list that Shane had made and Hayden had sent him. Hayden helped set things up with Shane, as Ilya watched the two babies, feeding both his son and Arthur in turn. Ilya was in awe of the tiny baby, holding him as he read through all the information Rika had sent with him. There was a lot, and a lot of things that they would have to take care of. Lying in bed, the two talked a little more.
“I really do want this, Ilya,” Shaen said, turning around in Ilya’s arms and looking at him in the dark.
“I do as well,” Ilya told him, “I want this; it is going to be hard. Pike is right, if Montreal is no good, staying is going to be hard for you.”
“I have a no-trade agreement in my contract,” Shane said, “And a few clauses that Farah insisted on when my ELC ended. She’d been talking to management, and she overheard a few things that they and Coach said. She made sure I was protected.”
“Have they broken it?” Ilya frowned.
Shane nodded, “A few times, I’ve got an email not even three days ago that called me a diversity hire and that I should never have become captain. Hayden is at the end of his; he was going to re-sign, but I think if I leave, he’ll want to do the same.”
“Where are you going to look at?”
“Somewhere as close to you as I can,” Shane admited. I’ve already sent a message to Farah, and she’ll look at it for me. Going to have to tell my mom, and that’s not going to be pleasant. She’s a die-hard Voyageurs fan, has been since she was a kid.”
Ilya nodded, pulling Shane closer, “Do what you can to be able to come home to us.”
Shane nodded, yawning, “Today has been a lo-” he began, only for Mikhail to start crying. “I’ll get him.”
“No, I shall; he will need change and feed,” he said.
“I’ll get the bottle, and move some of the milk to thaw out,” Shane said, as they both got up to take care of Mikhail.
XxXxX
Shane walked into the locker room. It had been two days since Mikhail had been welcomed into the family. Rika had been contacted, and everything was done to make sure that Rika would be recorded as the surrogate for Mikhail and that Shane and Ilya were classed as parents. They would be meeting Rika the next day to fill in the paperwork. Mikhail had a visit from the midwife to check him over. The woman had said that Mikhail had lost a little weight, but that was normal for a newborn.
Ilya and Shane had worried, but Hayden had backed her up. Jackie had also been told about Mikhail, and she had congratulated them for it, but hadn’t asked to come by yet, though both Hayden and Shane understood why.
Shane had gotten in contact with Farah the morning after Mikhail’s arrival, talking to her about what he wanted to do. Leaving Montreal, and about Mikhail and Ilya. Ilya was doing the same with his own agent as well. Making sure that the two could work together to bring the little family together. It was going to be some work, but Farah had said that Shane was entitled to paternity leave. It was still early in the season, only a month in so far.
“You look knackered, cap,” JJ said as he walked over.
“Newborns are hell on your sleep schedule,” Shane said before he could think.
“Newborn?” Drapeau commented, “Since when did you have a baby?” he asked.
Shane looked up. Realizing what he had said. “Fuck,” he cursed at himself. “Since two days ago, I’m going to be asking for paternity leave.”
“You can’t do that!” Laine said, “You’re the captain.”
“As per my contract, if I have a child, I’m able to take five weeks away from the team, so I can support my partner.”
“Boston Lily got pregnant, fucking hell, why the hell didn’t you tell us that!” someone else called out.
“We didn’t know,” Shane answered, and really, they hadn’t.
“What the fuck are you pansies doing? Get changed and get out on the ice!” Theriault yelled out as soon as he entered the room.
“The Caps got a baby!” Gangon called out.
“So what, he can get out on the ice too!” he yelled back.
“Actually, Coach,” Shane said as he stood up. He hadn’t brought his usual bag with him, since he hadn’t planned on doing any practice but asking for leave. “I need to speak to you and management about my paternity leave,” he stated.
“Not a fucking chance.”
“I am entitled to five weeks’ leave from the Voyageurs. I’m only asking for two weeks leave instead,” he stated. “I have the paperwork all needed to get it and file,” he added.
“It’s up to the organisation on what you fucking get, Hollander, so don’t come at me with this bullshit,” he hissed in his face.
Shane stared at him blankly. “Thankfully, it’s in my contract that should a baby be born, I will get two weeks’ paternity leave. If you deny it, then that breaks my contract,” he said, making sure to keep his voice level and calm.
“Not my fucking problem.”
“Then I’ll head up the chain, simple as that. I don’t care, my partner and I need some time with our newborn,” he said as he walked around Theriault and went to find someone else. He knew that some of management were around and that the GM would be around; he usually was during practices at the Bell Center.
“Get back here, Hollander!” Theriault shouted after him.
Shane ignored him; he knew he would pay for it eventually if he didn’t get out before his two weeks were up, if he got them. He found the GM. “Sir, I need to talk to you,” he said as he waited for the man to acknowledge him.
“Hollander, what can I do for you?” he asked as he gestured for the man to follow him into his office.
Hollander paused a second, pressing record on his phone. He had no idea how this was going to go, but he wanted to record all interactions with GM, Coach, and anyone else for now. He had proof already of the breaks in his contact. But this was just in case.
“So, Hollander, what brings you to my door?” Jason Pendle asked, gesturing for him to sit down.
“I am asking for paternity leave of two weeks,” he answered, clearly.
“I’m sorry, but Montreal only gives two games, and that’s it, and you will still be required to come for one practice between those games,” Pendle said, giving him a tight smile.
“My contract, that you and the owner both signed, is that I get five weeks as soon as I bring it to your attention that I have a child. I am bringing it to your attention that I have a newborn son at home and I’m only asking for two weeks instead of the five. I will be going home to my partner as we make the adjustment to being parents. I know this is sudden, but we didn’t know this was going to happen until our son appeared. Here is what you need,” he said as he handed over the slightly doctored paperwork, giving no name for the mother at all, and only his name for father, instead of the two.
“I’m sorry, but we can’t do that for you,” he stated.
“As I said, it’s part of my contract, you have the documents needed, and I will have my two weeks, even if I have to fight you,” Shane told him, shaking his head. “I’m not going to back down at all from this, Mr Pendle,” he finished.
“Again, Hollander, it’s not going to happen. We’re not going to be letting you go for two weeks. That’s five games we have; two games is the maximum you’re to be given,” he repeated himself.
“Then I’ll see you around; you’ve just broken my contracted terms once again. I will have my agent and lawyer contact yours about the breach of contract and what has happened several times in the past,” Shane got up and began to head out of the room.
“Now, Hollander, you really need to think about your position here,” he began.
“I have, several times. I’ve also come to you for help in making the room better, but none of you have cared to. Now you’re denying my contracted right to have time to spend with my son and partner after we suddenly became parents,” he said, shaking his head as he put his hand on the door, “I will again say. Look out for my lawyer and agent.”
Shaen walked out of the room, ignoring the GM. “This is so fucked up,” he said as he ended the recording. He quickly sent it to Farah so she could send it on to his lawyer, Anita Star. He needed to get back home. He knew that the Bears would be putting out an announcement about Ilya taking time away from the ice. He and Ilya had agreed that should both teams give paternity, they would both be announcing it at the same time, just not linking to each other. Boston had done well with Ilya; they had given him a whole month.
Shane also sent a message to Farah
Shane – When going public about why I’m not playing for Montreal. I am going to be transparent. That I wanted the two weeks out of the five that were written into my contract to spend time with my newborn son and partner as we got used to things.
Farah – Are you sure? There are going to be some people that are going to draw the lines between you and Rozanov.
Shane – It’s going to happen; people aren’t going to keep quiet that I have a kid. I accidently said it in the locker room while waiting to talk to coach.
Farah – Alright, we’ll deal. I’ll get in touch with Melissa, and see what we can co-ordinate. Oh, and I’m going after Montreal for breach, and for them to keep some of your salary; if so, we might be able to swing Boston. Might, no promises. But if not, then it’ll end up being New York.
Shane – Thank Farah, I’m going to have to talk to my mom before this hits. I told her and dad to come by for dinner tonight, that I want to introduce two people to them. Not sure how it’s going to go.
Farah – Find a bunker
Shane snorted at that. “Thanks,” he muttered.
Shane – Thanks for the confidence.
Farah – Welcome
Shane shook his head and headed out. Messaged Hayden a few things about what he could reveal to those on the team. Like, yes, there is a baby and that Shane is with his partner. But not the name or confirmation about who the partner is.
XxXxX
Ilya had done the cooking for their dinner that night. Spaghetti and meatballs, with a sauce made from scratch. Shane found that Ilya loved to cook, that he had been taught young by his mother. The doorbell rang, and Shane took a breath, kissing Ilya. “Right, I’ll let them in,” he said.
“Of course, moya lyubov,” he said, kissing him back and then putting the garlic bread he had made into the oven.
Shane smiled and headed to the door. He opened it. “Right,” he said, before even letting them inside. Know this: I’m gay, my partner is a man, and we have a child. Via surrogate,” he said before they could say anything.
“Shane,” Yuna began.
“Mom, I’m being serious; it’s going to surprise you. But know we’re together, and will be making a life together,” he warned them again as he let them inside.
Yuna and David shared a look before they heard the cry of a newborn in the apartment. Shane hurried to go and tend to the baby. The two followed their son as they watched him pick up Mikhail and murmur to him as he rocked him. “he’s only just been fed and changed,” he said, as he looked at them watching him.
“He okay?” Ilya asked as he walked out of the kitchen. “Mr and Mrs Hollander,” he greeted the two of them with a smile and a nod, “I’m almost done with dinner.”
“Wonderful,” David said, looking at the tall man.
Yuna looked between the two. “What… what the hell, Shane?” she asked, not sure she was really seeing what she was seeing.
“Ilya and I are together,” Shane said, going over to Ilya with their son in his arms, “He’s okay, just fussy. He’s been fed and changed,” he reminded his boyfriend.
“Da, I remember very stinky butt,” Ilya joked lightly, “Misha,” he said softly, “Why cry? You are being held by your daddy, and your papa is here too,” he said, “You have family all around you.”
“Here, go to Papa,” Shane said, making sure to use the Russian pronunciation.
Ilya took Mikhail.
“His name is Misha?” David asked as he walked over.
“It is Mikhail; Misha is a diminutive of it,” Ilya answered. “Misha, your grandpa,” he said as he moved Mikhail a bit so he was held more upright to see the room. Eyes were open, and that newborn blue was on display. Shane knew they would end up brown, but he was hoping that maybe genetics would be kind and give him Ilya’s hazel eyes.
“Hello, Mikhail,” David said. “Aren’t you a tiny one?” he murmured. “Reminds me of Shane; he was so small when he was born, just over 5 lb 4 oz,” he said softly.
“Was I?” Shane asked. “You know, I never asked before,” he said softly, a smile gracing his face at how easily his dad had accepted things. He was always laid back.
Yuna stood there for a while longer. “Shane,” she began.
“Mom,” Shane said as he looked at her, “This is who I chose, this is what I want. I want my family, all of us. It… might not be in Montreal,” he began.
Yuna jolted at that. “What do you mean, might not be in Montreal? You’re a Voyageur,” she reminded him, shaking her head.
“Not for much longer. You know how I put in the contract, the one that I had after ELC, that I should get five weeks’ paternity, should I have a kid. I saw what they did with some of the others, and I didn’t want them to do that to me. Hell, there are a few clauses in there, and they’ve breached four of them so far. I only asked for two weeks of leave, so you know. Now, Farah and Anita are going to be taking them to task. About the breach, I’m not going to re-sign with them,” he said, “I know you’re a big fan, Mom, but I can’t keep working for them. I’m so sick of management letting a lot of the team, and the coach, all get away with the racist remarks they aim at me and JJ, and others. I’ve tried several times to clean it all up, but nothing has worked. I’ve got emails from them about them not doing anything. So, I’m done. Farah did a good job with my contract when I mentioned a few things.”
“Are you sure about this, Shane?” she asked him.
“Mom, I’m really sure. I walked out today because they tried to tell me that I can’t have my paternity leave. I would have gone back if they had let me have it. And Mom, I’m not going to let it stand either. The NHL lets each team decide the amount of paternity a player has. Montreal gives them 1, maybe 2 games at a push. Hayden got one game, one, and he had to be back after the twins and Arthur. Even now he still has to come in when Jackie isn’t well. I think that the NHL needs to do it properly, give players proper time off to be with their family for the birth of a child. Maybe-“
“We can make sure, Botons gave me a whole month. They always do,” Ilya said from where he was now passing David Mikhail, “I need to finish dinner; garlic bread will start to burn otherwise.”
“Let’s go side down,” Shane said as he went to grab the small moving bassinet that had been ordered so it could be in the kitchen with them.
David looked down at the tiny baby, “Yuna, come here,” he said, his voice a little firm, “We have a grandson, Yuna, look at how perfect he is. He looks a little like Shane as well as Ilya,” he said.
Yuna walked over and looked at him, “Oh, oh, he does,” she said, “his eyes are so much like Shane’s.”
“Yeah,” David said, nodding. “Whoever they got to surrogate for them was a lot like Shane,” he murmured, “A beautiful blend of them both I think, because those lips are all Ilya’s,” he added.
Yuna looked at the baby, “They are,” she nodded. “Come on, let’s go and have dinner and get to know our son-in-law. I’m not sure about this, but… they have a baby now.”
David nodded and followed his son into the kitchen, to the small dining table that was set to one side. Yuna looked at Mikhail and watched as her husband put him in the bassinet. She now wanted to hold him.
“Hold him after dinner, Mom; he’s going to be wanting his own soon,” Shane said as he could read the want on her face.
“I will,” she smiled as she then looked at the two of them, “So… how did this happen?” she asked them.
Shane and Ilya shared a look, “Rookie seasons,” Shane said.
“No, Summer before, in a hotel room after shooting an advert together,” Ilya clarified.
“Oh my god, you were going up to see Shane!” Yuna exclaimed, eyes going wide.
Ilya blushed, “Da,” he nodded.
“What?!” Shane said, looking at Ilya, “You didn’t tell me you met my Mom?”
“She was about to get in the lift; I pretended I needed the next floor. She was coming from your floor. So I went to floor fifteen and walked down,” he laughed a little, “Was nervous then. Was scared.”
“Bloody hell,” Shane said, hanging his head, “Fuck.”
“Wow, since then,” Yuna said, shaking her head.
“And you saw the start and didn’t know,” David teased, as the two began to ask a few more questions of the couple.
Chapter Five
Rika had messaged that she would meet them at the cafe near the office they were to go to for the signing of all the papers. She wanted to tell them something. Shane finished burping Mikhail and settled him in his arms. They had been shown a private room, but the two men were still nervous about being there, together with their son. No one had taken any pictures, or even said anything; they just let the two men be alone as they were taken to the back room and given tea and sandwiches.
“I knew I made the right choice,” came a female voice as the door opened.
“Ayami?!” Shane said, looking in shock at his cousin. “Fuck, I should have known when I saw the sacral dimples, family trait,” he snorted, “And Rika, what you go by to fly under Aunt Yumiko and Uncle Yukito’s radar,” he said, leaning back.
“Correct,” she nodded, as she walked over and sat down, “Now you really understand why I can’t keep him.”
“They really would take him away, send him away somewhere,” Shane said, tightening his hold on his son just that little bit more.
Ayami nodded, “Yeah, they don’t even know I was pregnant, and I’d like to keep it that way.”
“Fuck yeah, of course, Rika Tanaka is the one to have our kid,” Shane said, agreeing instantly. “Ilya, this is my cousin, Ayami.”
“Sorry about giving you a false name when we met. I figured the two of you were friends, until we slept together,” Ayami snorted as someone came in with tea for the three of them, “Thanks, Mina,” she smiled at the woman.
“Welcome, Ayami,” she smiled back and headed out of the room with a nod.
“I work here occasionally. Mina and I are friends; she and those in the cafe are my friends. They knew and helped me hide my pregnancy and were able to keep me away from my parents,” Ayami told the two of them, “They’re good people here; they won’t say a word,” she added.
Shane relaxed a little. “So, how did you figure it out?” he asked.
“Rozy here is totally fucking gone on you. He called me Shane and then Hollander. Though that last one was cut off a bit. So it sounded a little more like Holla,” she snorted. “He tried to blame the Shane on Jane,” she added, giving Ilya a skeptical look, “Even showed me a few messages from Jane, but I caught another name in there. Lily.”
“Hmmp,” Ilya huffed a little.
“Confirmed that you two were something during the little reunion about seven months ago. I found out I was pregnant and wanted to confirm something with you before I decided on what I was going to do,” Ayami said.
“The grilling you gave me about relationships,” Shane groaned, “I said something about Lily, that I had someone.”
“Showed me some messages, when I didn’t believe him, got me to promise never to tell someone, saw a name. Jane. Made the connection, and then watched you both. I could see it, and then the condo you have, Shane. A week later, and Ilya Rozanov was getting out of a cab and heading inside, with you opening the door. So yeah, I deicded to go through with the pregancy, sorry I didn’t give you a choice in it, but…”
“you knew we both want children,” Shane said, “you know I did, just wasn’t sure I could be with a woman for it,” he said.
“I saw you with the babies and toddlers, you adore them, always look so wistful that you want it. And I see so many pics of you online with Hayden Pikes babies, all the time. And you talk about them a lot. I think I know more about those kids than I do about abny of our familes kids,” she smiled, “And Rozanov.”
“Ilya, please,” Ilya said.
Ayami nodded, “Ilya, I saw the same with you, you look at Shane with the Pike kids and complained when we were together, but you were jealous and wanting. I decided to take a chance. I had a couple lined up if you couldn’t take him. It’s why I gave you my number if you wanted to hand him back.”
“Which is why there was a letter in there for just in case we didn’t want him. They were Instructions?” Shane asked.
“Yes, on the couple I had chosen, should you not. They are very happy for you, by the way. NO hard feelings at all,” she said before her cousin could start spiraling about it.
“Thank you,” Ilya said, “For doing it. I know it was not easy. But you will have surrogacy payment, okay, no nos, just yes.”
“No, really I don’t want or need that at all-” Ayami began to protest.
“You do,” Shane said, “You gave us something really fucking precious. You gave us a son, one that is biologically related to both of us. Never thought we would ahve something like that. And if my mom is her usual bloodhound self, she’ll be trying to find the egg donor and surrogate, if there is no placement.”
“She’s going to be looking harder,” Ayami sighed, “I remember what she’s like.”
“Yeah, and if she babysits and sees the dimples…” he trailed off.
“First thought would be family, yeah, okay”, she said, not looking happy about giving in, “But try and make it seem like Rika Tanaka took payment,” she added.
“We will, promise,” Shane said. “Now, are you ready for all the paperwork?” he asked. They had to fill out a few forms for the surrogacy to be legitimate, and Ayami’s name won’t appear on anything, just Shane and Ilya’s.
“Yeah,” she said, “Oh, what… name did you choose?” she asked.,
“It’s a mouthful, but I think he might just grow into it,” Shane said.
“Mikhail Ilyich Shayevich Rozanov-Hollander,” Ilya said proudly.
Ayami smiled, “Yeah, a mouthful, but it will be something he grows into. Hey, Mikhail,” she said, “I’m your auntie, your dad and Papa are going to take really good care of you, and no doubt they will love you so much.”
They drank their tea and talked a little more before heading out for their appointment. Making sure to keep covered enough that no one would be able to recognise them.

Ilya snorted as he closed the app down, “They are not happy that idiot Montreal have just said you have two games.”
“Well, I asked for two weeks, even when my contract stated I could have five,” Shane said as he looked up from feeding Mikhail; they’d just finished another midwife visit. He had gained a little weight again, and the woman was happy with his measurements so far; she had also recommended a pediatrician that they could see until transferring to Boston.
Shane had made the appointment and asked for discretion and to make sure that no one could speak of what they learned.
“How are things going with them?”
Shane looked up as it took a few moments to realize what Ilya was actually asking. “Oh, yeah, Farah and Anita have them on the ropes. Farah has made contact with a team, and is negotiating; Montreal is going to retain 30% of my salary for two years for them not to have to pay out even more for breach of contract,” Shane smirked. “They save about half, as the way the contract was worded they would have had to pay out the rest of my contracted fee for it, and then 50% more. My Mom is ruthless along with Farah when it comes to contracts, and with Antia joining them, it’s been a joy to see them browbeat them into signing that one.”
Ilya snorted, “Yes, I saw,” he nodded as he walked over and sat down, “He drank well?” he asked.
“Yeah, 40 again,” Shane said, “can’t believe he’s a week old now.”
“I know, it has gone fast,” he added, wrapping an arm around Shane and pulling his boyfriend and son closer. “He is beautiful. Wonder if he will get freckles like you and Rika,” he said, keeping to the fake name, to help make sure they never slip and reveal that Ayami was Mikhail’s biological mother.
“Hmm, the birth certificate should come soon,” he murmured. “I can’t wait to see it,” he said, “just… proof,” he finished, looking up at Ilya.
Ilya nodded, “I understand it. I feel the same. That he is ours when we get it, officially.”
Shane leaned against him, his phone pinging as he got a few messages. “That will be the team. They still want to come over and meet Boston Lily,” he snorted.
“I think they will have a big shock should they meet your Boston Lily,” Ilya laughed as Shane reached for his phone and read through them.
“Yep, they want to head here. I might… tell JJ. He and Hayden have been doing what they can to direct the team elsewhere all the time,” Shane said softly.
“Do so, you trust him, I will be telling the team, as soon as you find a team,” he said, hoping it would be Boston. He’d been told they had made a bid for Shane. But not what it entailed. Because of the breach, Shane had a choice on where he could go, and Montreal would just have to suck it up.
“I do,” Shane agreed. He sent a message to JJ and told him to come by. HE also messaged Hayden and told him what he was going to be doing and that maybe he should stop by as well.
“I found more homes; this one is gated, and it has a nice garden for a child,” Ilya said as he brought up the listing he was looking at. “I had Marly go there; he took video and pictures,” he added, showing them to Shane.
Shane looked through it, “Oh, this one is better,” he said. “I was looking at another, another gated community, really good security. Park nearby, in the gated section, so very safe.” He pulled up one on his and then sent the link.
“I’ll have Marly check it out for us,” Ilya said. He was hoping that they would be able to choose a place soon. He wanted to be able to move in as soon as possible. He knew that Shane would want it set up properly for them all. Ready for Mikhail and any nanny that they would have come in to look after their son.
“You are going to be in Boston, even if you are in New York or somewhere else?” Ilya asked as he sent the link for Marly to go and check it out for them.
“Yeah, I don’t mind traveling when I can. Some nights I might crash in New York or wherever, but I’ll be coming home as much as I can. I don’t want to miss anything with Misha,” Shane said softly.
“Hmm,” Ilya agreed, “I know.”
“JJ is heading over, Hayden too,” Shane said, looking from his phone.
“Is he bringing baby Pike?” Ilya asked, sounding hopeful.
“Yes, he’s bringing Arthur,” Shane snorted, smiling.
“Good, little Pike is adorable, good playmate for Misha,” he added.
“You haven’t met Ruby and Jade yet,” he pointed out, “That’s going to happen soon; Hayden wants you to before we go to Boston to get Makhail settled there.”
“I look forward to it. Will Jackie be coming as well?” Ilya asked, wanting to know about Hayden’s wife. He’d heard a bit of what she was going through, thankful that those around her were taking things seriously, unlike how his mother was treated.
“Yes, from what Hayden has said, she’s going to start spending more time with Arthur, though only when family is around at the moment. Just in case, she says. Hayden is hopeful that the medication and therapy are helping her. So she’ll be coming,” Shane said, though he knew it could still be months or even longer before Jackie felt anywhere near normal.
Ilya took Mikhail as soon as there was a knock at the door. JJ and Hayden were the only ones who were able to get into the building. Shane got up and let the two inside.
“He wants Artie,” Shane warned Hayden.
“Right,” Hayden snorted, heading inside after toeing off his trainers.
JJ looked and frowned, “What is going on?” he asked.
“Right, I’m leaving Montreal, going to another team, not sure which team. There’s a bit of a bidding thing going on. But I think I know where I’m going to go. Right,” Shane said as he looked at his friend, though really, he knew where he was going. He just had to let everyone get their bids in before he made his decision. Boston had put in their bid second, after New York did. “You’re going to be let into a secret that only Hayden, my parents, and three others know. Just… keep an open mind,” he said as he led the way into the living room.
Ilya was sitting on the couch, with a baby in each arm. Shane gave a little groan, “So not fair,” he muttered under his breath.
JJ looked at him while Hayden just laughed.
“What is going on?” JJ asked, staring at Ilya.
“Hi, I am Lily,” Ilya said, “Sorry have arms full of beautiful babies,” he added.
“What the fuck?” JJ stated as he turned to Shane for answers.
“Ilya and I are together; we have a son. Mikhail. And yes, we’re both on paternity leave together. The surrogate is Montreal-based,” he said, going with the story that it was a surrogate. Hayden had said the same thing when telling Jackie. Only Ayami, Shane, Ilya, Mike, and Hayden knew the truth. And it would stay like that.
“Right, how the fuck did this happen?” he asked, sitting down on a chair.
Shane and Ilya began to tell him; most of that had happened from the draft up until that moment. Just adding in that they decided on a surrogate to have a child together. Who would be raised in Boston, since Shane didn’t think it was a good idea for them to be in Montreal, with a team like theirs.
“And that’s it,” Shane finished as he leaned against Ilya, now holding Mikhail as Ilya murmured to Arthur in Russian.
“Tabarnak,” JJ said, wide-eyed, “You are not what I thought, either of you.”
“No,” Ilya said as he looked up, “Mostly for cameras, for NHL fans, not for us,” he added, looking at Shane. “What we have is something most will not like.”
“And Montreal will hate it,” Hayden added, giving JJ a look.
“You are leaving, you really are leaving,” JJ slumped back in his chair.
“Yeah,” Shane nodded. “They keep breaching my contract terms, so since they’ve done that, I’m done. They want to give me four days with my son, and even then they want me to go in for a practice during that time off,” he rolled his eyes. “It’s not going to happen, but it was the last straw.”
“I understand it,” Hayden said. “I wish I had more time at home at the moment,” he added quietly. “Any parents should be able to spend time with their baby and partner after the birth; it’s stressful in a way that leaves you feeling off. You saw how I play when trying to keep up after the twins were born, and even now, still with Artie,” he added.
JJ nodded, “I get it, I don’t like it, but I get it.”
“It is lunch time; I’m ordering pizza,” Ilya said.
“Ilya,” Shane said, “It-“
“No, we need pizza, and stupid movies, and to go aww over cute babies,” Ilya said with a final nod.
“Fine,” Shane said, to JJ and Hayden’s cheers.
The two began to debate with Ilya over pizza and what movies they could watch. Shane sat back, holding and rocking Mikhail and wishing that there was a way to keep this. To keep his friends close. He would miss them when he made his choice; he really would. They had accepted Ilya and Mikhail. And by the look of it, he wouldn’t be holding a baby soon enough. JJ was glaring at him to hand over the week-old baby.
Shane laughed lightly as he was right, and JJ came over to hold Mikhal. He held the tiny baby, as pizza was ordered and Ilya and Hayden came to an agreement on a movie to watch. The four of them planned a little gathering in a few days as soon as Shane knew where he would be going.
This was an amazing read and I know it will be one of my comfort reads in the future.
I just adore Shane and Ilya with babies.
Awesome beginning and chapters.
I’m already obsessed with this! Surprise doorstep baby delivery ✔️ A baby that looks like both of them ✔️ Ilya fathering a child with not only a Shane lookalike but his actual cousin ✔️ Supportive Hayden ✔️ Shane saying “Fuck Montreal” and voluntarily moving to Boston ✔️ I’m in love with every bit of it!
This is awesome! I love all of your writing, but I think this may become my favorite of them all.
Intresting start!
