I seem to be living in this space where I hate the idea that Christopher Pike's fate is sealed. Every idea I've had lately revolves around fixing that shit. I'm also writing a Pike/Una romance for the first time ever. If you know me at all, you know I almost never write the main pairing in a fandom, mostly because I don't see the challenge in it. But Una's Illyrian heritage presents a juicy opportunity because Illyrians are nearly completely undefined in canon. So, I'm playing with some concepts regarding their genetic legacy here, in addition to fixing Pike's fate.

Sometimes your fate is etched in stone and your only choice is to learn to live with it. Sometimes you don't even know what your fate is until you're staring it in the face. And sometimes, what you thought was your fate can change in the blink of an eye. It's what you do in those moments that defines you, for that is the role of Fate in the universe.

Author Notes

This story includes some seriously dubious science. Since the genetic modifications the Illyrians engage in aren’t well-defined apart from necessity in a story, I’m going to be incorporating some concepts that I’ve been developing in my head as I’ve watched the show. I’ll probably add things as they crop up during the challenge, but the one that I’m currently exploring is below.

Persistent vs Transitory:
Illyrian genetic modification adapts the population to its environment, rather than the other way around. It’s an environmentally responsible tactic that lets the Illyrians leave their environs unchanged as they establish a colony.

As a result, they’ve learned that some modifications can and should become persistent, meaning they become inheritable characteristics. The Illyrian healing ability is one such inheritable characteristic, as is the ability to breathe in an atmosphere low in oxygen and high in other gases that would prove detrimental to unmodified humans.

Some modifications are considered transitory, meaning they modify only the person receiving the gene therapy and are not passed down to offspring. Examples would be enhancements to sight, hearing, strength, or other physical characteristics that would benefit colonizers but would be unnecessary in an established colony.

I've been writing fanfiction for about ten years now in a multitude of fandoms, both new and old. I love rare pairs, so chances are you'll discover a new one if you spend any time reading my work. Jane Austen is my literary hero, though I love a good Tom Clancy novel just as much. What can I say? I'm a study in contradictions, and I like it that way!
